Last-minute shoppers visit grocery store before winter weather

With an Arctic blast making its way to the area on Jan. 14, shoppers made their way to grocery stores in the morning before it arrived.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — While temperatures were below freezing on Jan. 14, the road conditions allowed for some to get their last-minute shopping done.

Shoppers stopped by the Harps on Crossover in Fayetteville. Rick Payne stopped by in his Kansas City Chiefs coat, a day after the pro athletes won in freezing temperatures.

Payne said he normally likes to attend games. Friday's game was a little different. Even though his sons invited him to go to the game, the cold weather kept him at home.

"We're getting a few last-minute items before the big snow comes," Payne said.

Payne said he plans to stay indoors and keep a fire going.

"We're just going to sit in and watch football. Stay warm," Payne said.

"I'll be sitting next to [the] fire, watching the playoffs," shopper John Ervin said.

Some items that shoppers bought weren't necessities one might think to get for a winter storm. Nick Wengel stopped by the store with his wife and two kids to stay entertained during the frigid temperatures.

"Doing just last minute shopping, getting some puzzles for boredom. This stuff, unfortunately, probably won't be able to sled with the weather being so cold," Wengel said.

Many lists recommend non-perishable items to prepare for winter weather, but many wanted warm meals instead.

"I've got some brown beans and ham I fixed yesterday, so that's comfort food," Ervin said.

Payne said,  "We got the milk and bread yesterday but some potato soup sounds pretty good."
