Psychology teacher in Fort Smith gets national recognition

Martin Hyatt, a teacher at Northside High School for more 25 years, was named recipient of the Charles T. Blair-Broeker Excellence in Teaching Award.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — A Fort Smith psychology teacher has received national recognition by the American Psychology Association Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools

Martin Hyatt, a teacher at Northside High School for 25 years, was named recipient of the Charles T. Blair-Broeker Excellence in Teaching Award.

According to the American Psychology Association website, Hyatt was recognized for "his efforts to make his classes engaging," saying he "seldom fails to capture the attention of his students and often creates relatable lesson plans."

“I am certainly proud to be selected as a recipient of a “Charlie” award," said Hyatt. "Anyone who met Charlie knew almost immediately that he was a guy whom others needed to model, which is why it’s certainly an honor to be linked to such an incredible psychology teacher. Maybe most importantly, being recognized by TOPSS gives serious credibility to the old adage—hard work works. While I may not have any extra special skills as a teacher, I work hard to build relationships and am willing to go the extra mile for other students and fellow teachers.”

The school's principal, Chris Carter congratulated him, saying, “Mr. Hyatt is the epitome of a teacher! He goes above and beyond to build relationships with all of his students. He loves Northside High School and is very deserving of this award!”
