Man pleads not guilty to charges related to deadly Lake Fayetteville shooting

Jose Casillas, 20, is accused of terroristic threatening, aggravated assault, and unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A Tontitown man has pleaded not guilty to charges in connection to a shooting at Lake Fayetteville that left 18-year-old Christian Alexander Rodriguez-Barroso dead.

Jose Casillas, 20, is accused of terroristic threatening, aggravated assault, and unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle. He is set to appear in court on July 15.

Officers were dispatched to the Lake Fayetteville Environmental Studies Center after 11 p.m. on Feb. 15 and found Rodriguez-Barroso dead and four others injured with gunshot wounds, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Video of the shooting showed a large number of cars and people gathering near the lake for a fight, police said. At some point during the fight, people can be seen running away to their cars as guns are fired. According to the arrest report, witnesses told police that before the physical fight took place Casillas was "yelling at them while pointing an AR-15 style gun at their faces." Casillas allegedly threatened them saying "he would kill them one by one while pointing a gun at them."

Casillas admitted to police that he had an AR-15-style weapon at the lake during the shooting and "fired his gun toward a vehicle that was shooting at him." When Casillas was shooting at the the vehicle, the vehicle he was in hit a bump causing him to drop the AR-15, the release said.

Arrested and booked on March 20, Casillas was the third of four arrests made in connection to the fatal shooting.

Gilberto Gordillo, 19, was the first arrest made. Gordillo was booked into the Washington County Jail on Feb. 21 on one count of capital murder and four counts of attempted murder. He has since pleaded not guilty and has received a trial date of Nov. 4 this year.

Alberto Esteban-Cruz, 21, was arrested on March 15. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder and related charges. His trial date is set for May 13.

Following Casillas' arrest, 20-year-old Pablo Garcia was arrested on April 10. He's accused of hindering apprehension or prosecution and tampering with physical evidence, according to a police report. He is set to appear in court on May 8.

Garcia's booking in the Washington County Jail also included counts of theft by receiving, careless driving, criminal use of a prohibited weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.
