Eureka Springs officer justified in killing 36-year-old man, prosecutor says

The man was shot and killed by the officer on March 1, 2024, after a struggle.

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. — The officer who shot and killed 39-year-old Christopher Vanschoick in Eureka Springs on March 1 was justified, according to the prosecutor in charge of handling the case.

Tony Rogers, the prosecuting attorney for the 19th East Judicial District that covers Eureka Springs, announced that nearly two months after the deadly shooting, the officer's use of deadly force was "based on applicable law," and concluded that "criminal charges against the officer are not warranted in this matter."

Arkansas State Police (ASP) investigated the officer's use of force and submitted its investigation to the prosecutor.

Shooting:

According to the Eureka Springs Police Department (ESPD), there was a shooting involving an officer in downtown Eureka Springs on the night of March 1.

ASP reported that the Carroll County Sheriff's Office first received a 911 call from the Rowdy Beaver Den that stated Christopher Vanschoick, 36, had shown a gun during a disturbance.

ASP said two ESPD officers found Vanschoick in his vehicle and when they confronted him, a struggle ensued. During that struggle, police said Vanschoick "produced" a handgun, and one of the officers fired his gun, killing Vanschoick.
