Fort Smith Museum of History hosts Day of the Dead celebrations

The museum will hold a celebration with a traditional ofrenda and a Catrina performance on Nov. 1 and an art workshop with Mexican artist Isaac Helguera on Nov. 4.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Day of the Dead—better known as Día de los Muertos—is a Mexican and Mexican American holiday that honors and greets loved one who have past as they journey back to be with the living around this time each year. Often celebrated in the beginning of November, Día de los Muertos is a religious holiday seeped in tradition and history from pre-Columbian and Catholic customs. Here is how you can celebrate with the Fort Smith Museum of History this year: 

El Dia de los Muertos Program and Traditional Ofrenda

  • What: River Valley Adult Learning Alliance and the Fort Smith Museum of History will celebrate Day of the Dead by honoring a traditional Mexican ofrenda and hosting live Catrina performance from Miriam Olivia. Artists Lizbhet Guanajuato, Mayra Rene, and Esmeralda Flores will display their work for purchase. 
  • When: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and program begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The ofrenda exhibit will be displayed Nov. 1-Dec. 15. 
  • Where: Fort Smith Museum of History at 320 Rogers Avenue

El Dia de los Muertos Cultural Art Studio with Mexican Artist Isaac Helg

  • What: The Fort Smith Museum of History and studio partner, Fort Smith Regional Art Museum will offer workshop conducted by Isaac Helguera in honor of El Dia de los Muertos. Helguera will teach participants how to create sugar skulls and Catrinas. 
  • When: 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4
  • Where: Fort Smith Museum of History at 320 Rogers Avenue
  • Cost: $8 for adults 16 and up. $6 for seniors and those who have served in the military. $4 for children between 6-15 and students at UAFS, ACHE, and CAJC. Children under 5 are admitted for free. Get tickets here.
