List of school closings for Wednesday, Jan. 17

With snow remaining on the ground due to frigid temperatures, schools are beginning to cancel classes for Wednesday, Jan. 17

It was a record-cold start to Tuesday, Jan. 16, with arctic air moving out of the area and warmer weather beginning to return. That being said, there is a chance of melted areas refreezing overnight.

The last time Arkansas saw well below zero degrees was back in 2021 during a record-breaking cold blast. That's when Fayetteville hit a record low of -20 degrees. We won't be that cold, but we will be below zero. Keep dripping the faucets tonight.

School closings

By Tuesday afternoon, several schools announced they would be canceling classes on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The University of Arkansas canceled classes for Wednesday. Arkansas Tech University - Ozark will replace in-person classes with online learning on Wednesday. 

Rogers, Bentonville, Fayetteville, Springdale, and Fort Smith Public Schools announced they will be closed on Wednesday.

"Due to inclement weather, Fort Smith Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Reminder: meals are not served when school is closed," Fort Smith schools said. 

Muldrow and Moffett school districts in Sequoyah County were the first schools to announce that in-person classes would be canceled and replaced with online learning for Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to winter weather conditions.

Sallisaw School District joined in Oklahoma school districts closing on Wednesday. Central and Roland School Districts have canceled in-person classes and replaced them with online learning for Jan. 17. Belfonte School District will resort to AMI learning for Wednesday. 

Just after noon on Tuesday, Ozark School District announced that due to the winter weather, they will cancel classes on Wednesday.
