Police release new details on Farmington head-on crash that killed three

"Through comprehensive examination, accountability for the accident has been attributed to Mr. Kaufmann’s reckless operation of a motor vehicle."

FARMINGTON, Arkansas — Police have released new details on the Farmington head-on crash that killed three people and injured one on April 18.

On April 18, the Farmington Police Department (FPD) first reported that a white Acura driven by 40-year-old Stephen Kaufmann was driving south down Broyles Street at "extremely high" speeds when it drifted into oncoming traffic, striking an SUV head-on.

In a release on April 26, police confirmed that Kaufmann was going 102 mph in a 30-mph zone and was potentially intoxicated.

"A rapid drug screening urinalysis was completed at the time of Kaufmann’s death which identified marijuana, alcohol, and kratom present in his system. A quantitative amount from a complete toxicology is pending at this time," FPD said in a release on April 26.

"Various contributing factors, including but not limited to possible intoxication have been identified, providing context to the accident and its implications," FPD said. "Through comprehensive examination, accountability for the accident has been attributed to Mr. Kaufmann’s reckless operation of a motor vehicle."

FPD says that the investigation included analysis of the "black boxes" inside both cars.

The investigation also included witness statements and expert assessments, FPD said.

Kaufmann was reportedly killed in the crash, along with 14-year-old Laurelye Kaufmann, and the driver of the SUV that he hit.

A passenger in the SUV was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

"The Farmington Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the Kelley and Kaufmann families and other loved ones affected by this tragic event. We recognize the profound impact of their loss and remain committed to supporting them throughout this difficult time," FPD said.
