12th Annual Rainbow Thanksgiving held in Fayetteville in support of LGBTQ+ community

This event aims to support the LGBTQ+ community on this holiday considering that many aren't able to go to their family gatherings, or don't have a family at all.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Thanksgiving is this week and people are already preparing to host their family dinners.

NWA Equality and other local organizations teamed up to host the 12th Annual "Rainbow Thanksgiving." It was held from 6-9 p.m. at Fayetteville Town Center.

This event aims to support the LGBTQ+ community on this holiday considering that many aren't able to go to their family gatherings, or don't have a family at all. The event gives them an opportunity to come together and enjoy a meal.

Organizers prepared a free Thanksgiving dinner for over 300 people and the food was "100% chef-prepared," according to NWA Equality.

Program Director for The Equality Crew, Micahel Bennett, says this is the perfect occasion to celebrate the holiday together.

"So this kind of ensures that they don't spend the holidays alone, that they get that opportunity to spend time with what we often call 'chosen family' which are the people that you choose to put in your inner circle and spend your time with. And that way, they still get the joy of the holidays," said Benett.

A candlelight vigil to honor Transgender Day of Remembrance is being held at Turnbow Park in Springdale on Monday, Nov. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
