Hmong community celebrates its New Year in NWA

The Hmong Association held the two-day celebration with a sports competition, food, traditional dances and singing performances.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — The Hmong community celebrated its New Year in Washington County on Sunday, Oct. 15.

The Hmong Association held the two-day celebration with a sports competition, food, traditional dances and singing performances.

Organizers from the event say people from across the country came to celebrate. They say this event is an important showcase of Hmong culture in the Ozarks. 

"Celebrate our Hmong culture, and welcome everyone to come and to see how Arkansas it is to see is different from the other states out there," said Steve Yang, sports director of Hmong Association Inc.

"That's very important that we have many things in the culture to do. So the young people they come to learn and to keep the Hmong culture in the future," said Saidang Xiong, New Year Chairman, Hmong Association Inc.

There were also prizes for winners of the sports and entertainment competitions. All the proceeds from the event will go back to the nonprofit for future events.
