Police: Officer's vehicle struck cyclist in Fort Smith crash

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Police responded to a crash near Northside High School in Fort Smith involving a police vehicle on Friday, May 24.

The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) said that the incident occurred near South 20th Street and Rogers Avenue, and traffic flow was expected to be affected.

FSPD confirmed to 5NEWS that it was a police vehicle that hit a bicyclist. They believe the injuries are non-life-threatening, and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital.

FSPD Captain Daniel Grubbs said that the bicyclist is expected to make a full recovery. The officer is not on leave, and FSPD believes there is no wrongdoing on the part of the officer, who was not injured in the crash.

Grubbs adds that there has been an increase in jaywalking in the area.

Drivers were encouraged to take alternate routes in the area.
