Scam Alert: Sebastian County Sheriff's Office warn of fake calls

The family member was told it was a "captain" from the department and "wanted them to get their loved one out of jail," according to the release.

SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ark. — The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) is warning residents of a phone scam going around in the area.

SCSO said someone called the family member of a person who is currently booked in the detention center. The family member was told it was a "captain" from the department and "wanted them to get their loved one out of jail," according to the release. The victim was told to send the money via Cash App and the inmate would be released after the payment was received.

The victim did as they were told and fell into the scam. SCSO said they would "never use this method to release inmates." They said if anyone is ever in doubt of who is calling them, call FSSO at 479-783-1051. This also applies to scams where a victim is told they have a warrant and must pay  through an app or gift card.

"Please don't send money until you verify," said SCSO.
