FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - The Walmart Foundation has donated $75,000 to farmers' markets in Northwest Arkansas for the Double Your Dollars program.
Farmers' markets in the area will offer people on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) a chance to double their money by matching the goods they buy with a coupon. The coupon works the same as cash for those wanting to buy fruits, vegetables and other designated items at the farmer's market, according to Arkansas Market Snap.
The program is in place to make it easier for low-income residents to buy healthy foods, said Leann Halsey, Fayetteville Farmers' Market business coordinator.
"One of the greatest benefits is the nutritious food," she said. "It's not only locally grown so it has the highest amount of nutrients in it when it's picked by the growers, but it's also grown by people in our community, people you can get a chance to know and learn about how they grow their food."
