With severe weather season underway, storm shelters are on the minds of many.
Shelters produced by Cockrum Welding Fabrication in Van Buren can be set in any existing room of your home, according to company owner Chancy Cockrum.
Cockrum says in light of the tornado in the Midwest, he decided to install one in his own home Thursday. The steel shelters are bolted together. Cockrum says they can withstand an EF-5 twister. He felt the urge to begin production following severe weather outbreaks last year.
"We started manufacturing in 2011,” he says. “All the storms and tornadoes was coming through and I seen a need in this local area to have them."
Cockrum has several shelters in stock and they are available through FEMA. The shelters can be customized for various room sizes.
