Cpl. Michael Moss with Fort Smith Police says eyewitnesses claim the accident happened when a white truck crossed the center line on Highway 45 and hit a sports utility vehicle traveling southbound.
Both vehicles ended up on a grass embankment.
Medical personnel had to administer CPR to the driver of the truck. He was slumped over shortly before the accident happened, eyewitnesses told police.
First responders took both drivers to Mercy in Fort Smith to be treated for their injuries. The driver of the truck was barely breathing on his own, according to authorities. The driver of the white SUV had minor cuts and bruises. No passengers were involved.
The accident was reported just before 12:30 p.m. Officers redirected traffic for at least three hours until the vehicles could be removed from the scene.
