The oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Arkansas is at risk of closing. Now members are trying to save the Van Buren historic building and service.
The VFW 1322 in Van Buren is the oldest VFW post in Arkansas. It received its charter in 1925.
Post Quarter Master James Mansfield says the building was built in 1950 and has historical significance.
"It's been named after Robert Jack,” said Mansfield. “He's the first causality of World War one."
Now Mansfield says members are doing everything possible to save the post.
"It serves our county and own town, and it gives us a voice in legislation," said Mansfield.
The camaraderie also supports veterans health benefits and assists in other needs.
VFW members say a big part of their service is getting involved in the community.
This Saturday, the post will hold a flag ceremony to demonstrate how to properly dispose of an old American flag. The proper way is to burn it, and the Van Buren Fire Department is expected to be at the event to assist.
The post is also looking to the community it serves to help raise money to renovate the post building.
On June 30, post members will have a yard sale to kick off fundraising efforts.
“One hundred percent of it is going to be going right back into the post,” said Mansfield, “As you can see, it needs some repair."
The flag ceremony Saturday is expected to kick off at 9 a.m. at the VFW 1322 Post.
