A mother and daughter are behind bars after police say the Fayetteville women assaulted a neighbor, with one of them swinging a baseball bat around.

Karen and Krystal Young were arrested Friday on suspicion of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a minor. They remain in the Washington County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Fayetteville police said a neighbor confronted Karen about being rude to her children, after which Karen told the neighbor to leave her property. The neighbor did not leave, and Karen blew cigarette ash in the woman’s face and punched her in the cheek, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police said the neighbor never threatened Karen, and the suspect had plenty of opportunity to step back inside and diffuse the situation.

The argument between the two women continued, with Karen’s daughter Krystal swinging a bat at the neighbor and her daughter, according to the preliminary report. The report does mention whether the bat made contact with the intended targets.

The argument woke up Karen’s son, who came outside and escorted the neighbor away from the Youngs’ home, ending the confrontation.

Responding officers took witness statements and arrested Karen and Krystal Young following an investigation.
