ROGERS (KFSM) — If you want to find a way to offset that big big turkey dinner, or if you just want to give back to a good cause, the 9th Annual Turkey Trot 5K is happening Thursday (Nov. 24).

Many folks wake up Christmas morning to presents and hot chocolate, but not everyone is that fortunate; including out nation’s Sheep Dogs. The Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (SDIA) wants to change that.

A Sheep Dog is any former or current veteran, police officer, firefighter or first responder. The purpose of the Turkey Trot 5K is to raise money to help provide for these people and their families.

“What really makes this race unique is the fact that it is on a holiday,” said Sgt. Major Lance Nutt with the SDIA. “What we see is a lot of people look forward to coming out and participating as a family, early in the morning, especially before they sit down and start to gobble up the Thanksgiving food,” Nutt added.

Toys, clothes and anything else that will make their holiday merry and bright will be donated.

“We adopt the children from who we refer to as Sheep Dogs,” according to Nutt. “Through their family’s struggles, this season we’ll be able to adopt and provide each of them with their Christmas wish list,” Nutt said.

The Turkey Trot 5K kicks off on Walnut Street at the Center for Nonprofits in Rogers from 9 a.m. to around 11 p.m.

Organizers expect over 800 people to come out to the big event.
