FPD: Man wounded after his gun discharged during arrest at the Northwest Arkansas Mall

"The suspect was carrying a firearm that discharged during the struggle," Sgt. Stephen Mauk said.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A man was wounded by his own gun and taken into custody during an altercation with police after attempting to flee on foot, according to Sgt. Stephen Mauk with the Fayetteville Police Department (FPD).

Mauk said another individual was doing donuts in the Northwest Arkansas Mall parking lot near Dillard's when an officer stopped them.

When officers approached the individuals, one man began to flee on foot. An officer caught this individual, but Mauk said he was struggling during the arrest.

"The suspect was carrying a firearm that discharged during the struggle," Mauk said. "The suspect was superficially wounded by his own round and taken into custody. No officers discharged their weapons."
