Kansas City police identify 3 men found dead in friend's backyard

A fiancée of one of the victims found the bodies while searching for her partner

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department has identified the three men who were found dead in their friend's backyard in early January.

Clayton McGeeney, 36; Ricky Johnson, 38; and David Harrington, 37, were reportedly found by one of the victim's fiancée the night of Jan. 9. According to reports, the three victims were part of a group of friends gathered at the home of Jordan Willis to watch the Kansas City Chiefs-Los Angeles Chargers game on Jan. 7.

The fiancée found the bodies while searching for her partner, his last known location being Willis's residence.

Police said when officers arrived, a body was first seen on the back porch, and the two other victims were found in the backyard area. Officials said there were no obvious signs of foul play.

According to CBS, investigators are waiting on the medical examiner's results to determine the cause of death of the three men. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.

"I'm not looking for anyone's head or anything, but my cousin was frozen to the dirt for two days," Alan McGeeney, Clayton's cousin, told KCTV," a family member of one of the victims told CBS affiliate KCTV.  "It's gotten a lot of attention from everyone having questions but not a lot of attention from anyone having any action; it just seems strange."

John Picerno, an attorney of Willis, told CBS News that his client went to sleep after his friends left his house and doesn't know what happened afterward.

"Jordan had absolutely nothing to do with their deaths. He does not know the timing or manner of their deaths, nor does he know how or when they exited his house," the attorney, John Picerno, said in a statement to CBS News. "He had no knowledge that they remained in his backyard or that they needed medical attention. Had he known, he certainly would have called for help. The last time he saw them was when they left his house, and he went to bed."

There were also claims that Willis ignored messages from the victim's loved ones who were looking for them in the days leading up to their bodies being found. However, according to Picerno, Willis didn't get any phone calls or text messages from friends or family members of the men.

"Two people came to his house; however, he did not hear them as he sleeps with air buds and a loud fan. One of those people, the wife of one of the deceased, tried to reach him via Facebook messenger; unfortunately, he did not see this message until after the police contacted him," Picerno said to CBS.

Another question that arose as reports of the investigation became a national story, was how Willis didn't notice his friends' cars in front of his house. Picerno says the cars were parked on the street and Willis didn't notice them.

"Jordan is unaware of how his friends died. Like the rest of us, Jordan is anxiously awaiting the results of the autopsy and toxicology report," Picerno said. "On behalf of Jordan and his family, we wish to express our deepest sympathies to the friends and family members of these young men, and our thoughts and prayers are with them."
