Sam's Club phasing out employees hand-checking receipts after check out

According to Todd Garner, Sam's Club's chief product officer, this means there won't be long lines.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — The Sam's Club in Springdale is the latest store with new AI technology simplifying the receipt verification process as shoppers leave with groceries.

This location joins more than 100 other clubs that will forego the human employee needing to stop you before you leave with your cart to scan your receipt and various items, and instead replace the process with AI technology.

Sam's Club describes the update as a "new digital innovation to further enhance" Sam's Club members' shopping experience.

According to Todd Garner, Sam's Club's chief product officer, this means there won't be long lines.

"When we combine this technology with our scan-and-go shopping experience, it provides a near friction-free shopping experience. That's no stopping. No queuing in line. No friction. The member can simply walk out and that's a big differentiated experience from what we had historically," Garner said.

Rolling out this technology is part of a broader plan to add the process to all Sam's Clubs by the end of 2024, making it the "first retailer to implement this kind of innovative technology at exit and at scale."
