The River Valley lost an established former politician and lawyer Tuesday, as former Arkansas Sen. Bill Walters died after battling pancreatic cancer.

Walters, 69, served as deputy prosecutor in Greenwood for Sebastian County from 1971 to 1975, later serving as a municipal judge for Charleston, according to the website for Walters’ law firm. Walters joined the Arkansas Senate in the 1980s, remaining a senator for the next 18 years.

McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood will organize Walters’ funeral services. The former state senator’s family is set to meet at the funeral home Wednesday to outline arrangements, according to the McConnell Funeral Home.
