Game Day Blog: Hogs Failure To Convert On Fourth Down Costs Game

Hogs look to top Aggies for first time since 2011

FINAL: Texas A&M 31, Arkansas 27. You can find a full recap here.

0:31, 4th Quarter – Hicks pass to O’Grady is blocked by two A&M defenders and Arkansas turns the ball over on downs. Arkansas loses their eighth straight to Texas A&M.

0:34, 4th Quarter – Hogs are scratching and clawing to keep this game alive. Hicks rushes for 17 yards on 3rd & 22. Arkansas takes a timeout with five yards to a first down.

0:52, 4th Quarter – Arkansas goes for it on 4th & 2 and it pays off when the Hogs can convert to a crucial first down. Hicks follows up with a major 22-yard pass to Mike Woods. Hope is alive and well in AT&T Stadium.

3:52, 4th Quarter – A Jamario Bell sack on third down resulted in a long field goal attempt but the Aggies Seth Small knocks home a 50-yard kick to push the Aggies lead back to four. Arkansas with a chance to respond. Texas A&M 31, Arkansas 27

8:45, 4th Quarter – Arkansas cuts into the Aggies lead with a 40-yard field goal from Connor Limpert. Arkansas went 53 yards on 11 plays and got a big play, 31 yards from Treylon Burks on third down to keep the play alive. Texas A&M 28, Arkansas 27

12:11, 4th Quarter – A 50-yard catch and run by Treylon Burks was wiped out by a mistake in alignment. Tough break for Arkansas.

12:21, 4th Quarter – The back and forth history of the Southwest Classic continues as Mond’s third touchdown pass of the game results in the fourth lead change. Aggies 28, Hogs 24

0:00, 3rd Quarter – TAMU is starting to take control of the line of scrimmage as the Aggies have used the ground game to move to the red zone. Arkansas leads 24-21 as they head to the fourth quarter.

2:15, 3rd Quarter – The past two Arkansas drives have started inside their own 15-yard line and both have failed to pick up a first down. A third down sack forced a punt from the back of end zone. TAMU takes over at the Arkansas 49 after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Aggies.

3:43, 3rd Quarter – Texas A&M looked poise to regain the lead but Mond’s throw into the end zone looked like it was intended for Montaric Brown. Big stop for the Hogs defense and they’ll take over at their own 12 after a short run back.

8:06, 3rd Quarter – Arkansas goes three and out and TAMU will have good field position. Aggies take over at their own 44.

8:55, 3rd Quarter – Texas A&M goes three and out for the second straight drive in the second half so for the first time today, Arkansas has a chance to add to their lead. Hogs take over at their own 8 after a 59-yard punt.

10:34, 3rd Quarter – Arkansas marched 84 yards in just eight plays and used 2:37 of the clock to regain the lead. Ben Hicks has started 6-of-7 passing since replacing Starkel while Devwah Whaley capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. Hogs 24, Aggies 21

11:35, 3rd Quarter – The Arkansas defense started the half with a three-and-out and the offense has responded with a crisp drive. Hogs at the TAMU 24 but now facing a 3rd and 7.

Half – ESPN reports that Nick Starkel won’t paly in the foreseeable future as he doesn’t have strength in his left arm.

0:08, 2nd Quarter – Texas A&M is still finding little resistance in the passing game as they have 182 yards through the air, including a 22 yard scoring connection from Mond to Quartney Davis. Hayden Henry missed a tackle and he ran away from the rest of the defense for the score. TAMU 21, Arkansas 17

1:55, 2nd Quarter – Starting with a short field and Arkansas took advantage. Rakeem Boyd picked up 16 yards and then the Hogs capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mike Woods. It was a perfectly placed, back shoulder ball just inside the pylon and the Razorbacks have the lead. Hogs 17, Aggies 14

3:16, 2nd Quarter – A big punt return by Treylon Burks has Arkansas in business but the Hogs will be with a new quarterback. Starkel looked to injury his left arm/shoulder after making a tackle on his previous interception. Ben Hicks will start the drive with the Hogs at the TAMU 41.

5:30, 2nd Quarter – Arkansas needed something to go their way and they got it as a fumble in the TAMU backfield allowed Scoota Harris to scoop up the loose ball and walk in from six yards out. Texas A&M 14, Arkansas 10

5:36, 2nd Quarter – Facing pressure on second and goal from inside the TAMU 5, Starkel threw the ball in the direction of the line of scrimmage and was picked off by an Aggies defender. There didn’t look like there was a receiver in the area. Starkel’s 6th interception in the last six quarters might have been the worst. After a second look, it was supposed to be a screen pass where Rakeem Boyd was tackled.

7:13 , 2nd Quarter – Needing a score to keep things close, Arkansas is putting together their best drive of the game as O’Grady and Whaley both catch first down passes. A pass interference call on TAMU puts the Hogs inside the 10 with a first and goal.

9:45, 2nd Quarter – Texas A&M has already piled up 116 yards passing and they find their way back into the end zone. Isaiah Spiller caps the 75 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run. Texas A&M 14, Arkansas 3

14:15, 2nd Quarter – Arkansas get points on their third drive of the game but it could have been more. Koilan Jackson collided with an official which prevented any chance of converting a third down attempt. Limpert knocks through a 46 yard field goal. Aggies 7, Hogs 3

0:00, 1st Quarter – Arkansas puts together a pair of big plays, including a 24 yard run from Rakeem Boyd. Hogs at the Aggies 33 as the first quarter comes to a close.

2:56, 1st Quarter – Texas A&M made that drive look easy as they go 63 yards in seven plays and need less than four minutes to do so. Kellen Mond’s nine yard touchdown pass caps the drive. Aggies 7, Razorbacks 0

4:09, 1st Quarter – Big plays helping the Aggies second drive of the game as they’ve put together four plays of 10 yards of more. TAMU has it at the Arkansas 11.

6:47, 1st Quarter – Nothing doing for Arkansas on their second possession as Mike Woods wasn’t ready for a third down pass. A short punt gives TAMU decent field position to start their drive. Aggies take over at their own 35.

9:59, 1st Quarter – Texas A&M got behind the chains after a Sosa Agim sack but the Aggies just missed a home run down the middle of the field. Kellen Mond overthrows a wide open receiver that would have resulted in a 40+ yard gain. Aggies instead have to punt as Arkansas takes over at their own 13.

12:17, 1st Quarter – The Razorbacks come up empty as Connor Limpert hooks a 52-yard field goal.

12:23, 1st Quarter – Arkansas took the opening kickoff and has moved to the Aggies 35 behind a 3-of-4 passing start from Nick Starkel but the Razorbacks call timeout facing a 4th and 5.

As Arkansas looks to stop the bleeding after a loss to San Jose State last week, a familiar face shows up on the schedule but also one who the Razorbacks haven’t had much success against.

The Hogs have not beaten Texas A&M since 2011 but they have been close, but we all know that doesn’t count. Four of the previous five meetings between Arkansas and the Aggies have been decided by just a touchdown.
