FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Jorden Lawrence has been nothing short of stellar on the mound for the Fort Smith Sportsmen.
"The summer so far has been outstanding for me," Lawrence said."I mean, I've had a couple of iffy games, but most of them have been really outstanding for me."
The Ouachita Baptist sophomore and former Southside rebel has helped the Sportsmen to a 28-4 season going into this weekend's American Legion state tournament.
"Jorden Lawrence has been an anchor for our team the last two summers," Sportsmen coach Trey Prieur said. "A kid that's got a lot of upside that we're looking so forward to continuing to watch his career."
Run support is usually key in helping pitchers succeed. Lawrence says that hasn't always been the case this summer, but his teammates work does help him seal wins.
"Well, some games my offense doesn't really hit for me, that's the thing. Most games they are really locked in. They see those fast balls, and they hammer those wherever they're put," Lawrence said.
But it is really him who helps make this team, and not just by his work getting batters out.
"He's been very good for us, not only as his performance on the mound, just his leadership, The way he carries himself. Our guys know when he's on the mound we're going to have a very good chance to win," Prieur said.
Lawrence is looking to help the Sportsmen seal a state title this weekend.
