GUILFORD COUNTY — A section of Interstate 85 will be named after Greensboro native and longtime politician Howard Coble.

The stretch of 85 between I-40 and Alamance Church Rd., close to Coble's childhood home, will bear his name. Governor Pat McCrory joined the state Department of Transportation Thursday to pass a resolution authorizing Congressman J. Howard Coble Highway.

Coble, a 30-year U.S. Representative, died last month after battling skin cancer and several other health problems for multiple years.

“Howard Coble was an amazing congressman who set the standard for sincerity, hard work and honesty in public service,” Governor McCrory said. “I considered him a mentor and friend. Most importantly, he was a tireless advocate for his constituents. I’m proud that we can honor his legacy in this way.”

Coble was a representative of the state's sixth congressional district from 1985 to 2015. District 6 includes Greensboro and Durham.

Coble fought in the Korean War and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran. Prior to his time as a congressman, Coble was an assistant federal prosecutor, state revenue secretary and state legislator.
