TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) — A 26-year-old woman is being held on a capital murder charge after Arkansas authorities say her 3-year-old stepdaughter died from injuries suffered when the girl was beaten.
McKenna Belcher was incarcerated Saturday at the Miller County jail following the death Tuesday of McKinley Cawley.
A police affidavit says Belcher told detectives that she became angry when the girl bit her thumb and that she slapped the child and threw her to the ground.
McKinley’s father allegedly told detectives that Belcher inflicted extensive injuries, including by “stomping” on the girl’s legs. The child later died at a hospital.
It’s not clear if Belcher has an attorney to speak on her behalf.
The father is being held on a charge of permitting the abuse of a minor resulting in death.
