GREENWOOD (KFSM) - A 13-year-old student was intercepted by authorities on Thursday (May 14) after plotting to kill three other students and himself at a Greenwood school, police say.
Authorities said the incident took place at East Hills Middle School. The student involved was placed in a mental health treatment facility, according to the Greenwood Police Department.
Detectives are planning to meet with prosecutors on Friday afternoon (May 15), but no further details could be provided on the case because it is an ongoing investigation, police said.
Another student learned of the suspect's plan, told their parent and that parent contacted authorities, police said.
The Greenwood School District released the following statement:
"We would like to commend the student who actively responded with his knowledge regarding another student's potential actions. In addition, we acknowledge the quick response by the school administrator to ensure the safety of all students. Our school resource officers worked with the Greenwood Police Department and school administration to cover all aspects of this incident. We are pleased with the procedures that were followed to diffuse a potential situation at the East Hills campus. It is our intent to protect all staff and students through continued training regarding crisis intervention and investigation in the future."
