FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- A standoff between authorities and an armed male in Fort Smith ended after tear gas was used to remove the man from a home.
According to the Fort Smith Police Department PIO Aric Mitchell, the standoff happened near the intersection of Churchill Rd and Bradley Dr in Fort Smith.
Mitchell told 5NEWS residences near the home heard gunshots fired around 5:00 p.m., officers arrived on scene shortly afterward.
Following nearly two and a half hours of negotiations, officers and SWAT members were able to arrest the barricaded man after entry was forced into the home and tear gas was deployed.
The male has been identified as Ismael Mejia,
Police say the altercation all started with a family dispute and alcohol was involved.
Mejia is being held at the Sebastian County Detention Center.
