A $200,000 bond has been set for James Arthur Moffett, 33, accused of shooting and killing a Sequoyah County man over the weekend.

Moffett is currently being held in the Sequoyah County Jail on a negligent homicide charge, but that charge could be changed to second degree murder, according to the district attorney’s office.

Moffett is expected to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

Stanley Leon Ross was found shot and killed outside of his home Saturday night, according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.

The shooting happened in the driveway of a mobile home about seven miles north of Vian on Vian Creek Road.

Someone from the home called 911 and reported the shooting about 7:15 p.m.

Lockhart said the man was dead when deputies arrived. He’d been shot once in his upper body.

Lockhart said several people at the scene were being questioned by Sequoyah County deputies. Moffett, who was still on the scene when the deputies arrived, was arrested for public intoxication. They waited until he was no longer under the influence of alcohol to question him.

“After interviewing several witnesses and collecting the evidence, Mr. Moffett was also arrested for negligent homicide,” said Lockhart.

According to Sequoyah County Detention Center records, Moffett has been arrested 12 times since his first charge in 2003. He’s faced multiple alcohol and drug related charges, as well as charges for assaulting a police officer.
