A Fayetteville man faces a pricey bond after police say he tried to steal more than 100 pounds of scrap metal in Prairie Grove before the owner tackled and held him.

Mark Rahat, 27, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of scrap metal theft, felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor criminal trespassing. He remained Friday in the Washington County Detention Center on $75,000 bond.

Rahat was caught attempting to load more than 100 pounds of scrap metal into the trunk of his car at a home on Illinois Chapel Road in Prairie Grove, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

A man returning to the residence saw Rahat and tackled him after Rahat tried to run away, the report states. When police arrived, they found between 100 and 150 pounds of scrap metal in Rahat’s trunk, as well as a car battery. There were also several small pieces of metal pipe placed in a pile nearby.

Rahat was arrested at the scene by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
