While most teachers spend their summer away from kids, one retired River Valley educator stays in touch with neighborhood children.

For more than 30 years now, retired Darby Junior High Coach Jerry Jennings has been spending his summers teaching kids and adults how to swim at Creekmoore Park pool in Fort Smith.

But pool manager Michael Norwood, who is still in education and a former coach, says Jennings teaches his students more than how to swim.

‘What I like about him, not only does he teach swimming but when the classes are over he teaches a great deal of character development, he teaches kids how to be, go from young people to mature adults,” he said.

Norwood is now assistant principal at Kimmons Junior High. He says when he retires, he hopes to follow Coach Jennings example and continue working with kids, too.
