FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KFSM) — An 18-year-old University of Arkansas freshman has died after being struck by a distracted driver while crossing a crosswalk on the UA campus on Saturday (Feb. 2).

Washington Regional Medical Center announced the teen's death for Monday (Feb. 4) evening.

The accident took place on Garland Avenue between the Garland Parking Garage and the set of dorms dubbed "The Quads."

The driver of the vehicle is a 17-year-old.

The teen driver received two citations: failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and use of a handheld device while driving according to Captain Gary Crain with the UAPD.

It's not clear at this time if the driver will receive upgraded charges since the victim has died.

5NEWS has chosen to not report the name of the victim or the suspect because they have not been released by investigators.
