CBS News – A man in Loma Linda was giving his dog a bath in his driveway Sunday when a swarm of bees he was keeping illegally in his backyard attacked.
CBS Los Angeles reports that it happened around noon in the 25500 block of Van Leuven Street, the Loma Linda Fire Department reports.
The dog had been sprayed by a skunk on Saturday and his owner was trying to wash off the stench. Officials say the drought conditions may have attracted the bees to the water.
The man and dog each were stung more than one hundred times.
Fire crews called to the scene also were stung by the bees.
The neighborhood was asked to shelter in place.
The man was taken to Loma Linda Hospital and his condition was unknown.
Crews gave the dog Benadryl and oxygen while washing him with foam.
CBS Los Angeles was there was a family member in protective gear was shown removing boxes of bees, mostly dead.
A family member named Daniel says they’d only kept the bees out the goodness of their hearts, to help with the bee shortage in California.
“I wanted to do something very good,” said Daniel, “but it came out very bad.”
He says they had the bees, “not for the honey, but to save the environment.”
Neighbor Adam Iloilo lives down the street with his three kids and said he is fortunate he and his children were not attacked.
“It kind of makes me a little nervous for my children playing outside,” he said.
Kastner was told the dog was taken to Loma Linda Animal Hospital in very bad shape and may not survive.
