Local Hula Hoop Video Goes Viral on YouTube

Not many girls workout in knee high fur, but Katie Keck-Wilson has an all-around different way of doing things.

Not many girls workout in knee high fur, but Katie Keck-Wilson has an all-around different way of doing things.

She's got a YouTube video with over a million hits, Katie says the story went full circle after three years.

“It's a video of myself that I posted on YouTube of me hula-hooping to one of my favorite bands called Goldfish. The strange thing is that I posted the video almost 3 years ago and it only had a few hundred hits. But one day it just went off. It exploded.”

Katie saw some “hoop girls” at a music festival, and soon learned all the tricks of the trade.

What may surprise you is what made the YouTube video go viral three years after it was posted.

It turns out that Goldfish the band has a global reach.

“I think it all has to do with the band that I danced to. They're really big in South Africa and Denmark. A blog in Denmark found my video. I'm sure they were looking for information about the band and so the posted my video dancing to their music as a promotion for the band coming,” said Katie.

Katie grew up in Northwest Arkansas and graduated from the University of Arkansas. When she's not hoopin, she's an elementary school art teacher.

Katie says hooping is a great workout.

“It's a good cardio, good core, and it's a good stress reliever. When I get home from work I  usually hoop for 10-to-15 minutes if I've had a really long day of work to kind of unwind.”

Katie is already considering making some Hula-Hooping exercise videos trying to capitalize on her fifteen minutes of fame.  She's got the tricks, and she'll even consider hoopin-it-up at special events.

Just remember the name, Katie Keck-Wilson!
