Voting

ARKANSAS (KFSM) – Monday (Feb. 29) is the last day for “early voting” in Arkansas.

Election board members said they are expecting a rush of early voters. In the past on the last day of early voting, they have had lines out the door and through the ground level of the courthouse. It became an issue when they had paper ballots but, the first time, voting is being done by new electronic machines.

Voters will be handed a printed ballot after checking in. That ballot will be inserted into one of the new machines and the voter will make his or her selection. Finally, the ballot will come back out for the voter’s review and will be placed into another machine which will finalize the vote.

“Some people don’t like change, but once they get in there and see how easy it is they’re very excited about it,” said Chief Deputy Nesa Bishop.

Poll are open from 8-5 on Monday.

Republican party designee on the State Board of Election Commission Stuart Soffer said that workers are required to ask voters if they would like to present ID, but it is not mandatory that voters show it. ID can range from utility bills, bank statements to driver and hunting licenses.

Soffer said election workers ask each voter for name, address and date of birth, to see if it matches what is in the ‘election book.”

The three alerts workers look for are first-time voters, absentee ballot sent and early voting. Some voters may be asked to fill out a provisional ballot.
