FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)-- Northern Fayetteville is growing in both retail and residential areas near the Northwest Arkansas Mall.
Since January, several large developments have broken ground on Steele Boulevard. City planning director Andrew Garner said two 300-unit apartment complexes and a bank are in the works.
"You have a big employment center at the mall and the hospital," Garner said. "You're also starting to get some housing to support the young professionals who work in those areas, so I think it is very exciting to start to see that area develop into a more complete area."
Another large retailer coming to the corner of Van Asche Drive and Steele Boulevard is a JJ's Bar & Grill restaurant and brewery.
Owner Jody Thornton said the growth on Steele is what attracted him to the area. Van Asche Drive has been expanded and connects to Rupple Road.
"So on the west side people can get right over to us, so it's really helpful," Thornton said. "That's part of the reason we chose this area, just the expansion."
City officials have added a four-way stop to the intersection of Van Asche and Steele. They said the stop may be upgraded to a stoplight once all of the retailers are open.
