VAN BUREN (KFSM)- Officials with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said Thursday (May 28) they are monitoring a small portion of Arkansas Highway 59 in Van Buren after cracks formed in the road following days of torrential rain.

The area is about two miles north of Interstate 40. Several viewers have emailed 5NEWS after noticing that part of the highway appears to have sunk.

According to Danny Straessle, the spokesman for AHTD, the department plans to bring in a geo-technical engineer team to look at the cracks and a crew to do some patch work. He said currently the cracks are not a safety issue and the road will remain open.

The AHTD shut down three miles of Arkansas Highway 23 earlier this month after a portion of a hill slide out from underneath the road creating large cracks in both lanes. That part of the highway is closed until the department can make repairs, which Straessle said could take weeks.
