LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) – Republican Gov.-elect Asa Hutchinson has announced a new Arkansas Department of Correction director, according to a news release.

Wendy Kelley has been named as the new director.

“I am excited and honored to work with the Governor-elect in his administration,” Kelley said. “The ADC is full of dedicated professionals who work everyday to carry out the agency’s mission of public safety.”

Kelley has served as chief deputy director of the Arkansas Department of Correction since January 2014, the release states. She is the first female to hold that role, according to the release.

She is also a graduate of the University of Arkansas.

Hutchinson released the following statement:

“Wendy has shown remarkable leadership in her current role as Chief Deputy Director of the Arkansas Department of Correction. Her leadership capabilities, in addition to the experience and knowledge she possesses having worked at ADC – not to mention the years she’s spent working alongside the department – make her the ideal choice for this time of change and challenge within the Department of Correction, and I know she will lead the Department with skill and integrity.”
