FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- George McGill has won the election to become the next Fort Smith mayor.

Former State Representative George McGill defeated challengers, Wayne Haver and Luis Andrade.

McGill won with 57% of the votes, Wayne Haver received 33%, and Luis Andrade got 10% of the votes.

George McGill will replace Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders, who didn't run for re-election in 2018.

Sandy Sanders has been Fort Smith mayor since 2010.

McGill will be the first African-American to serve as mayor in Fort Smith.

McGill told 5NEWS he plans to serve his term just like his campaign, listening and finding ways to accommodate everyone living in Fort Smith.

"I'll continue listening to them. I'm gonna listen to those who work at city hall, those that are in business large and small, and then listen to the average guy who works hard every day."

McGill will be sworn in during the first week of January 2019.
