Fort Smith police and fire officials are searching for a driver they believe was injured in an early morning accident in Fort Smith on Thursday (Nov. 28).

The single-car accident happened on 70th Street and Dallas Drive. Because of the damage to the car, authorities said they believe the driver was injured in the accident. However, the driver left the scene before crews got on site, authorities said.

Police said they believe the driver may have hit some gravel near a construction site, causing the car to skid. Authorities said they believe the driver then over-corrected and hit a gas meter at the Sebastian County Health Department before coming to a stop.

The car is registered to a company in Atlanta instead of a single person, which authorities said makes it harder to figure out who they are looking for.

Police are checking local hotels to see if the driver is from out of town.

Gas service to the health unit that was hit will be shut off while the meter is repaired.

Anyone with any information about the driver or this accident is asked to please call the River Valley Crimestoppers tip line at (479) 78-CRIME.
