A Fort Smith man, Daniel De Jesus Lopez Diaz died Sunday night (April 14) after driving fast and crashing into the back of a pickup truck, Fort Smith Police said.

Sgt. Brandon Byrd said Lopez Diaz, 24, collided with a small Nissan pickup truck in the 4500 block of North O Street. Sgt Byrd said Lopez Diaz's Suzuki motorcycle clipped the truck and then skidded down the street before hitting a mailbox.

People at a church nearby said they heard the accident. They attempted to help the Lopez Diaz, and give him CPR before paramedics arrived. Lopez Diaz was taken to Mercy Hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

The accident closed down several blocks of O Street while police investigated the scene.

Lopez Diaz was wearing a helmet, and the driver of the pickup was not injured, Sgt. Byrd said.
