FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office have captured a sex offender who caused a local school to be placed on lockdown Tuesday (Nov. 20).
Bonneville Elementary in Fort Smith was put on lockdown Tuesday morning while police searched for Cameron Carlos Santana, who fled from sheriff’s deputies following a traffic stop.
Santana, 31, was captured without incident, according to authorities.
Sgt. John Hicks said deputies attempted to pull over Santana for a traffic stop earlier Tuesday, but he fled in a black Chrysler 300 before ditching the car and fleeing on foot.
According to Maj. John Miller, Santana is a Level 2 sex offender, and was convicted of sexual assault of a child.
Cpl. Anthony Rice with Fort Smith police said the school was put on precautionary lockdown while police assisted the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office in the search.
