FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Dozens of women bikers rode across Arkansas on Monday (June 6) for a good cause.

A local riding chapter of the Chrome Angelz welcomed women bikers as part of the 2016 women’s freedom ride. They stopped at Old Fort Harley Davidson in Fort Smith before they continued their journey into Oklahoma, along with a sheriff’s department escort.

The freedom ride consisted of spending 18 days riding through 18 states, trying to raise awareness for female motorcyclists.

“Women riders are becoming a new thing,” said Lynn Deatherage, Chrome Angelz secretary. “We all got tired of riding on the back of our husbands’ bikes. We wanted to feel the wind in our faces as well and thrill of it, and more and more women are seen out on the roads riding their own bikes.”

During the ride, the local chapter raised more than $500 that will be donated to the freedom ride, which will go toward paying for the mortgage of a wounded female combat veteran.
