FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Wednesday (Mar. 16) afternoon, the Donald W. Reynolds foundation dedicated the Pendergraft Grant to several local education programs.

The foundation provides money to education platforms that help propel learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

“Our role is to provide the icing, that little piece which the schools district couldn’t provide,” said Cambre Horne-Brooks, Director of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation. “It is really based on our teacher’s ideas. It comes outside of the scope of the normal curriculum that they might have in the classroom.”

One of those programs receiving a grant is the Ozark Natural Science Center, which gives elementary school students state-mandated education in science.

“[Students] will be studying outdoor science. Things like geology, native plants and animals, and it is all tied to Arkansas State Science standards. It is really helping to advance what the teachers are doing in the classroom,” said Matthew Miller, executive director of the Ozark Natural Science Center.

The center will use the $9,000 grant it received to educate students.

“[Receiving the grant] means we will get all of the fifth grade students in Fayetteville out to the Center for Outdoor Science education,” Miller said.

Those who directly represented the grant said it was important to assist the community in efforts to expand educational opportunities.

“Education is extremely important for all of our children, all of our future,” said Neal Pendergraft, Trustee of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. “Tax dollars only go so far. We have to come out of our private dollars, whether it is with time or money. We can do a lot of great things for students.”
