The first Fayetteville modern home tour showcased seven contemporary homes.

Organizers said the rich contemporary architecture the city has to offer is Fayetteville’s hidden treasure.

"A lot of great local architects Marlon Blackwell, Brad Payne, Timothy Maddox, and of course the University School of Architecture,” said Cameron Fry, tour manager.

The Buckley house, designed by Arkansan Fay Jones, it’s a 1968 classic nestled in the wooded hillside.  The combination of nature and modern design is one common trait among these architects.

"A lot of the homes that we visited they actually have rooms where the wall just completely retract and the back yard becomes a living room for them,” Fry.

The Keenan Tower House, designed by Marlon Blackwell, has dozens of stairs leading up to the home and the roof gives visitor’s a bird's eye view of the city.

"I actually thought it was a fire tour I mean that's what I thought but no he built this on purpose intentionally and the design is great," said Theresa Wilton who visited the modern homes.

Those in charge of the tour say it's difficult to describe contemporary architecture.

"I've seen minimal design to very elaborate and different levels. It's just a thing that tends to challenge the traditional view of architecture," said Fry.

Many visitors say they are shocked to see innovative designs in Northwest Arkansas.

"It's amazing that there is this quality of architecture and style and design here in Fayetteville so well worth it," said Wilton.
