FRANKLIN COUNTY (KFSM) -- New equipment was installed at the Franklin County Jail Thursday (May 19) after six security cameras, smoke detectors and other items were destroyed during an inmate riot.

More than 15 inmates were involved in a riot on April 30. The jail has since increased the number of jailers to prevent similar incidents.

Jail Sergeant Tina James said the riot can partly be blamed on overcrowding at the jail.

“Because they’re in a small area, tempers flare up, and they can’t get out and do what they want to do and move around like they want to,” James said.

The jail houses nearly 50 inmates.

The Franklin County Quorum Court has until June 6 to submit a plan of action to the Arkansas Criminal Detention Facility Review Committee after the county was told the rundown jail is not meeting minimum standards required by the state.
