LINCOLN (KFSM) – A Lincoln man was arrested on Jan. 12 after sending child pornography over a smartphone application, deputies say.
James E. Miller, 40, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on Monday at 7:33 p.m., according to jail records. Those same records state that Miller faces a charge of distributing, possessing or viewing child porn.
On Oct. 2, 2014, a deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children concerning a local child porn case. The tip stated that on July 24, 2014, Google’s systems captured an IP address associated with two email addresses owned by Miller, deputies said. Google’s systems snagged an image of child porn that was made publicly available through a Google account associated with Miller’s email addresses, according to an arrest report.
The deputy assigned to the case requested personal information from Cox Communications on the customer associated with the IP address Google’s systems tracked. Cox Communications informed authorities that the IP address belonged to customers John and Barbara Miller of Lincoln, deputies said. Further investigation revealed that the email addresses Google associated with the child porn belonged to James Miller, so he was later brought in for questioning, the report states.
James Miller’s interview took place on Dec. 31, 2014, at the Lincoln Police Department. He confirmed that the two email addresses Google had found to be affiliated with the child porn were his, but he denied knowing anything about the illegal images, according to authorities.
He gave deputies permission to search his smartphone, left the device with them and went home from the interview, the report states. On Jan. 12, deputies searched the phone and found images of child pornography stored inside, authorities said. James Miller was called back in for another interview, and when he was confronted with the images, he admitted to getting them from someone else over the smartphone app known as Kik, according to the report.
In addition, he also admitted that he passed on the images he received to other users of the Kik app, deputies said. According to authorities, James Miller was unable to provide any information about the identities of other people involved in sending or receiving the illegal images.
He was taken into custody after the second interview, and no bond has been set for him, jail records state. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14 at 7:45 a.m., authorities said.
