The driver of a ski boat that crashed into a pontoon boat killing one man over the holiday weekend turned himself in Monday (July 8).
Ryan Shumway, 30, of McAlester, Okla., turned himself in to the McIntosh County District Attorney’s Office, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Shumway was driving a 1999 Crowline 20-foot ski boat on July 4 when it crashed into a 2002 Crest Pontoon and a 1996 Stingray that were anchored together.
The body of Gary McIninch, 55, of Oklahoma City, was recovered Saturday evening in 17 feet of water approximately 400 yards from the shore line at Lake Eufaula in McIntosh County. The body was found roughly a mile east of Eufaula Cove, where McIninch had gone missing after the accident.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers say the pontoon, holding 10 people, landed on top of the Stingray.
McIninch was thrown off the boat following the crash and has been missing since then. Two children and another man were injured.
Shumway stopped to check on the boaters, but as crews searched for the missing man, he took off, KOTV reports.
According to an OHP report, Shumway, two small children and a woman were on the ski boat at the time of the accident. They were not injured.
