LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas lawmaker says he wants the Legislature to continue studying loosening regulations for the use of deadly force in self-defense after his plan to do so failed before a committee.

The state Senate on Monday approved Republican Sen. Bob Ballinger’s request to send his “Stand Your Ground” proposal to interim study, meaning lawmakers will study the issue before the 2021 regular session.

Ballinger’s proposal had failed before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month. Before it was sent to interim study Monday, Ballinger had left open the possibility of trying to revive the measure by having it pulled from committee so the full Senate could take it up.

Ballinger’s initial proposal had faced opposition from prosecutors and law enforcement who said the state’s current self-defense law was sufficient.
