FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Fort Smith Police Department will be seeking re-accreditation from a national agency this week, and the public is invited to provide input.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. will be examining the Fort Smith Police Department’s procedures, operations, services and management beginning on Monday (Aug. 1), according to a department press release. The department will gain accreditation if it meets the agency’s standards, which denote that the department has achieved professional excellence.
As part of the commission’s assessment, individuals can provide input to the assessment team about the department and its ability to meet the CALEA standards. To do so, individuals can call 479-709-5238 on Tuesday (Aug. 2) between 2-4 p.m. Comments must be no longer than 10 minutes.
Additionally, Fort Smith residents can provide written feedback by mail to the following address: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.
A copy of the CALEA standards will be available at the Fort Smith Police Department.
If the department is accredited, it will maintain that designation for three years.
