PRAIRIE GROVE, Ark. — The 5NEWS morning crew took a step back in time at the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park on this episode of Around the Corner.
The park commemorates the Battle of Prairie Grove where Confederate and Union soldiers fought on Dec. 7, 1862, in the last major Civil War battle in Northwest Arkansas.
The state park is considered one of America's most intact Civil War battlefields. Arkansas State Parks has been able to preserve 1,000 of the original 3,000 acres.
Today, the park hosts the state's largest Civil War reenactments on even-numbered years during the first weekend in December.
On the grounds of the park, there are several monuments where you can learn about the people involved in the war, like Maj. Gen. Thomas Hindman. Gen. James Blunt or Gen. Francis Herron. You can also find original-era homes and buildings that are scattered throughout the park.
Not only do visitors come to the park to learn about Arkansas history, but they also come out to enjoy the beautiful trails.
After visiting the park, the 5NEWS morning crew got the great idea to explore even more state parks across the Natural State. Arkansas has 52 to choose from.
Tiffany, Jo, and Zac picked up their Arkansas State Park Passports in the museum — they didn't even have to apply for one!
If you're looking to get a stamp in your Arkansas State Park Passport, you can visit the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park between Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
